TATO
by
Kathe Gogolewski
FOR TEACHERS
Several packages for teachers are available: 1) Kathe will visit your school for
one day and present to students as an author. Through animated demonstrations
and discussions, she will motivate and encourage them to write. Or, 2) she will
engage your students in language arts activities and/or science experiments that
explain certain illusions in the story, Tato. This integrated and thematic
curriculum can be presented for up to one week and up to two periods a day. 3)
Any combination above is possible from one to five days. Teachers may request
as little or as much time from the author as they think best serves needs. As a
retired schoolteacher, Kathe is steeped in lesson plans and knows how to
deliver the best program to serve your students and your curriculum. The book
and curriculum is approved and recommended by the San Diego School
Districts of Oceanside and Carlsbad, lesson plans comply with California
Content Standards in Science and Language Arts for grades 4 and 5.. Author
visits have been recommended by Oceanside and Carlsbad School Districts.
Kathe writes grants for teachers and piloted an integrated science and literature
project for TATO in seven 4th and 5th grade classrooms in the San Francisco
Bay Area in February and March, 2006. Since the story revolves around a boy, a
formula and a lot of magic, students performed science experiments that explain
certain illusions in the story. They also engaged in language arts activities such
as creating wanted posters for the villain, graphing story events with
checkerboards and chips, and writing news articles for the events in the story.
The grants covered a class set of books, the Teacher's Edition, the honorarium
and for some, science materials.
Teachers anywhere in California that are interested in having Kathe visit their
classrooms to demonstrate the program with their students should contact Kathe
to find out how to participate. An experienced grant writer, Kathe will locate and
ghost write the grants for teachers to approve and sign. All lessons in the guide
are aligned with California Content Standards for Grades 4 and 5 in Science
and Language Arts. A strong English Language Learner (ELL) component is
included,. Teachers may pick one lesson from the planner for a single visit, or
many more as time allows.

READ TEACHERS’ EVALUATIONS:
Kathe visited seven schools in two school districts during the weeks of February
27 to March 17th, 2006. She demonstrated lessons from the Teachers’ Guide
that she wrote to accompany her book, TATO. The following are direct quotes
from evaluations turned in by the teachers after one full week of presentations in
each school:
From Valley View Elementary in West Contra Costa Unified, Richmond, CA:
Cris Connaughton: “Kathe did a wonderful job all week long. The students were
riveted to the book and the activities. They were well planned, but creative. They
covered a variety of knowledge, from math, science, art, writing and reading.
The materials were fun to use! The class used a broad spectrum of skills during
Mrs. Gogolewski’s activities.”
Harold Crawford: “Kathe’s obvious love and enthusiasm for writing and teaching
come out in her presentations. Kathe also has the classroom experience that
enables her to work with a new group of students effectively. I liked the way the
Teachers’ Guide is set up with so many integrated cross-curricular activities in
relationship to this wonderful book.”
From Barron Park Elementary, Palo Alto Unified, Palo Alto, CA:
Lucinda Surber: What a performer! The class was enthralled by the dramatic
reading, amazing magic tricks, and fascinating science activities. Kathe is a
wonderful teacher. The kids looked forward to her visit and hated to see her
leave each day. The book (TATO) was very engaging. As one girl said, ‘We don’
t like it, we LOVE it.’ (The Teachers’ Guide) is well organized with many options
for activities to go with the reading. Especially useful to me were the science
activities and chapter questions.”
Shromila Gupta: “During reading, I loved the character voices. Different styles of
getting the kids back for instructions were great ideas. The best part (about the
Teachers’ Guide) was the separate language arts and science activities
sections.”
From Herbert Hoover Elementary, Palo Alto Unified, Palo Alto, CA:
Julie Barnea: “Kathe is a dynamic presenter. Children are just glued to her
presentations. Kathe reading her own work was very powerful. I loved the
Science activities as well. Kids were very excited by them. What I liked best
about the Teachers’ Guide: A wealth of activities across a range of materials
and focus. I like the breakdown between Language Arts and Science.”
Susan Shelden: “What I liked best about the presentations: The modeling so I
know what to do. The involvement of the students. Wonderful Job! What I liked
best about the Teachers’ Guide: The voice, questions and activities that
coordinate with the chapters.”
Rachel Davis: “What I liked best about the presentations: Your pacing, variety of
hands-on and observation/discussion type of lesson. You were awesome! What
I liked best about the Teachers’ Guide: The large amount of supplemental
activities and the reference to CA state standards.”
