Kathe Gogolewski, president of TRI Studio LLC www.tri-studio.com and editor of The Fiction Flyer, a
free ezine for writers, announces a different kind of a contest for writers: Out-of-the-Box Promotion,
which invites authors to submit their ideas for unique promotional projects, largely untested and untried,
or very new. The contest will be judged by promotional guru Carolyn Howard-Johnson, author of The
Frugal Book Promoter and The Frugal Editor. www.carolynhoward-johnson.com.

Says Gogolewski, “As published authors, we all know what's expected of us: Write, write, write and
promote, promote, promote. While all of us are inclined toward the former, but many of us struggle with
the latter. The activities behind promotion can feel like shameless boasting, and may run contrary to
our inner promptings. Promotion becomes a distasteful task or, in other words…it's WORK.”
Gogolewski adds that it doesn’t have to be that way. The purpose of the contest is to discover new and
interesting ways to promote each others’ work and still have fun.

Entrants are encouraged to incorporate new technology into their ideas such as a YouTube or podcast
project. Networking with other authors may be part of the plan. Funny and fun ideas are encouraged,
such as writing and publishing interviews between the author and a main character in his or her book.
Gogolewski says strange ideas are okay too, “but not too strange!” She points to a recent
phenomenon springing up in cities across the globe: complaint choirs, and suggests a spin-off for
authors. http://www.complaintschoir.org/ She adds, “If it’s ethical and legal, and especially if it’s fun,
then we want to hear about it!”

An ebook with the winners’ ideas will be distributed and made available to authors through the TRI
Studio and Authors’ Coalition http://authorscoalitionandredenginepress.com/ websites. Modest cash
prizes are available, and winning ideas will be taken into consideration for a group networking and
promotional project.

GUIDELINES:
1. Create an idea in 400 words or less. Remember, we're looking for (relatively) untried creative and
original promotional ideas, something unique. Provide specifics. Links to help illustrate any idea are
welcome, but remember, your idea has to be largely original, so the link can provide the tool for your
idea or some facet of it, but not the entire idea.

2. Submit ideas in the body of the email. Graphic attachments (drawings) explaining your idea are
okay, too.

3. Use Arial 10 point font.

4. Submit to kgogolewski@sbcglobal.net with OUT OF THE BOX written in the subject heading. Also,
entrants must be subscribers to the free ezine for writers,
The Fiction Flyer. Send an email to Kathe
Gogolewski (same addy above) with EZINE written in the subject heading. Archived issues are here if
you want to see what they're all about: www.tri-studio.com/ezine.html

5. Deadline: January 31, 2008

PRIZES:
First place idea gets $10; second and third receive $5 each. We'll publish up to three honorable
mentions. An ebook will be created with the winning ideas and winners' bios for free distribution
among the writing community. Winning project ideas will be considered for Author's Coalition
promotional projects.

Have fun with this!
